Efferent and Aesthetic

The efferent and the aesthetic are on a continuum, not either/or binaries. The aesthetic/efferent continuum can describe our range of reactions to anything, not just text. It can be applied to art, design, or film, for instance.

Reading of a play, novel, or poem must include interpretation of the reader's affective reactions to the work.

Reading of a scientific report or a medical journal requires a that the reader focus on impersonal, factual elements and place less emphasis on personal affective reactions.
